Forefront Engineering provided BIM-based engineering and project coordination services for the 7.2 MW Shyam Khola Hydropower Project, a Peaking Run-of-River (PRoR) hydropower project developed by S.K. Energy Development Ltd. in Sadananda Municipality, Bhojpur District, Nepal. The project utilizes the water resources of Shyam Khola to contribute towards sustainable energy generation and regional infrastructure development. Forefront Engineering implemented Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodologies to support project planning, engineering coordination, visualization, and execution management throughout different stages of the project lifecycle. BIM technology enabled the integration of civil, structural, hydraulic components into a coordinated digital environment, improving collaboration among stakeholders and minimizing design conflicts during execution.
The BIM workflow was extensively utilized throughout the project to enhance design accuracy, coordination, and construction efficiency. It supported comprehensive 3D modeling and interdisciplinary coordination among various engineering disciplines, enabling detailed visualization of hydropower structures and key project components. Through advanced clash detection and design optimization processes, potential conflicts were identified and resolved at early stages, minimizing errors during construction. BIM also facilitated accurate quantity take-off and material estimation, improving cost control and resource planning. Additionally, the workflow aided construction sequencing and execution planning, allowing stakeholders to better understand project timelines and site activities. Overall, BIM significantly improved communication and collaboration between consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders while enhancing the accuracy and quality of project documentation and engineering deliverables.
The implementation of BIM significantly improved project efficiency, reduced coordination errors, optimized construction planning, and supported informed decision-making during the development process. Through digital engineering practices, the project demonstrated how BIM can enhance hydropower infrastructure delivery in Nepal by improving accuracy, transparency, and execution efficiency.
